What is project Moving Memories?

This was a project in collaboration with Stadsarchief Amsterdam. We made an animation and poster based on one of their stories. We where assigned to do this project in duo’s so I teamed up with my friend and classmate Beliza Jaring.

Process

Coming up with ideas

Before starting with the animation I needed to get a better understanding about the story and what feeling we wanted to capture in the animation. I did this by doing research.

Collage

Before starting the storyboard we each made a collage. From these collages we needed to pick 3 elements that we could use in the animation.

Storyboard

After we had our ideas sorted out we made a storyboard to visually guide ourselves and other people through the production process, but to plan out the shots aswell.

How we made our animation

We just drew a drawing, but made the objects in the drawing on different layers. Because of that we where able to animate those individual pieces in after effects and bring the drawing to live!
Because a long, effects-heavy after effects file doesn’t do well on my macbook we chose to edit the scenes individually and “glue” them together in Premiere.

Final product

Shots I made

I animated the whole animation and drew the shots displayed on the left side.

Video

This is the end product we ended up with. It was a LOT of work, the blood, sweat and tears, but above all the evenings and nights I sacrificed for this project. Crazy.
I must admit that I really enjoyed it and learned a ton about aftereffects, drawing in photoshop and working together for a longer period of time.
If I where to make this again I would definitely make other choices regarding the text for example, but overall I think we did good!

Poster

Making this poster was such a stressful but fun experience! I loved playing around with the composition and editing the image, but putting it together a couple hours before the deadline was everything but a pleasant experience, especially because it was for an actual organisation and not just my teachers.
I think if I could’ve had feedback from my teachers I could’ve taken it up a notch, but I am not mad at what I made on my own within a couple hours!
